The D7 visa (Passive Income Visa) is an affordable temporary residence card<\/strong> that allows anyone who can demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, either through stable, recurring income or through having a specific amount of savings, to reside in Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed specifically for foreigners, the D7 is an entry visa, valid for four months only and the residence card is issued for two years, renewable for the same period as long as the applicant continues to meet the requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the applicant meets the physical residency and naturalization requirements, the D7 route leads to permanent residency and\/or citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n

The D7 requires applicants to have a clean criminal background, obtain health insurance in Portugal, and prove their financial self-sufficiency. Successful applicants must also reside at least six months a year to renew their residence and to eventually apply for permanent residence and citizenship after five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most straightforward route to proving financial independence comes from proving a stable income. Applicants who are nationals of the European Union Member States, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are not eligible to apply. Applicants only need to show a specific amount of stable, recurring income, which could be either passive or active, to obtain a D7 visa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Income can take the form of stable employment, dividends, pensions, or otherwise, as long as it is stable, recurring, and can be obtained remotely while residing in Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n

This option makes the D7 excellent for digital nomads, entrepreneurs, passive shareholders, and retirees.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Portuguese law, the applicant must prove that they hold a minimum income. In terms of savings, the Portuguese government does have a route to apply for the D7 by providing proof of sufficient reserves which can cover an applicant’s living arrangements in Portugal for the validity of their residency permit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once approved, applicants must reside at least 6 months consecutively or 8 months non-consecutively a year in order to maintain their residence status. This physical residence requirement will automatically situate applicants as tax residents, meaning they will need to pay taxes in Portugal.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
